Na llende

Author/Band: Llan de Cubel

Asturian traditional music of celtic origin, CD

Description/Songs: The excellent reception of Llan de Cubelīs debut album, Deva, was only to be bettered with this their second release Na Llende (On The Edge), furthermore achieving the bandīs first Superventolín prize (for Best Folk Band). The success of this album drew interest from audiences abroad which also brought the possibility of performances throughout Europe and beyond, making the band a solid name in international folk circuits. In mid 1992 the famous Scottish folk group The Tannahill Weavers covered one of the tunes from Na Llende on their album The Mermaidīs Song.

Llan de Cubel are unquestionably the most internationally recognised Asturian folk group and their five records--published between 1987 and 1999--are basic for the new Asturian music. Their tunes are characterized by their recurring rhythm, the originality in treating the traditional tunes, the use of vindicatory and poetic texts (in sung themes) and a high melodic and instrumental quality. They play gaita, violin, flute, percussion, bouzouky, acoustic guitar, bass and--occasionally--accordion and synthesizer. Llan de Cubel are: Marcos Llope, Elías García, Fonsu Mielgo--three of the founders--, Simon Bradley, Xuan Rodríguez and Xel Pereda.
